Closing-line value: the only fast honesty test

Suppose someone shows you a 58% win rate across 40 bets. Is the model good? You genuinely cannot tell. At that sample size, a coin-flipper gets that result often enough that it proves nothing.

Results are noisy. You need an enormous sample before win rate separates skill from luck. Closing-line value gets you there much faster.

What it measures

The closing line is the final price before an event starts. It is the market’s most informed estimate, after every injury report, every lineup card, and all the money from sharp bettors has been absorbed.

Closing-line value asks a simple question: was the price you took better than that final price? If you consistently bet a team at +150 and it closes at +130, you were consistently getting more than the fully-informed market thought it was worth.

Why it works as a signal of skill

The closing line is very hard to beat. It aggregates enormous amounts of information and money. Beating it repeatedly is close to inexplicable by luck, because you are not being compared to a coin flip — you are being compared to the best estimate that exists.

This is why serious operators track it. It gives a read on whether a process is working long before the results settle down.

• Positive CLV with negative results usually means variance. Keep going.
• Negative CLV with positive results usually means luck. Do not celebrate.
• Negative CLV over a large sample means the process is genuinely not working.

The uncomfortable implication

A model can beat the closing line consistently and still lose money over a stretch. That is not a contradiction. It means the process is sound and the sample is short.

This cuts both ways, and it is why we publish CLV alongside record. A service showing only its win rate is showing you the noisier number — often deliberately.
